In 2012 Bishop completed a 290-mile (470 km) triathlon from Paris to London in five days, to raise money for the BBC charity Sport Relief. The "Week of Hell" began at the Eiffel Tower on Monday, 27 February, from where he cycled 185 miles (298 km) to Calais. The next day he rowed across the English Channel, then ran the 90 miles (140 km) from Dover to London in three days, finishing in Trafalgar Square on Friday, 2 March. He raised £1.6 million.

Kamiński holds the Guinness World Record for being the first person to walk to both the North Pole and the South Pole, solo and unsupported, even though it appears that Wojciech Moskal walked with him to the North Pole on 23 May 1995. In the same year, on 27 December 1995, he reached the South Pole alone.

Robert Duane Ballard (born June 30, 1942) is a former United States Navy officer and a professor of oceanography at the University of Rhode Island who is most noted for his work in underwater archaeology: maritime archaeology and archaeology of shipwrecks. He is most known for the discoveries of the wrecks of the RMS Titanic in 1985, the battleship Bismarck in 1989, and the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown in 1998. He discovered the wreck of John F. Kennedy's PT-109 in 2002 and visited Biuku Gasa and Eroni Kumana, who saved its crew. Ballard leads ocean exploration on E/V Nautilus.

Rochus Misch (born 29 July 1917 in Alt Schalkowitz near Oppeln, Upper Silesia) is a former Oberscharführer (senior squad leader) in the 1st SS Division Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler during World War II. He served as a courier, bodyguard and telephone operator for German leader Adolf Hitler from 1940 to 1945. As of 2012, aged 94, he is the last living survivor of the occupants of the Führerbunker in the final days of the war in Europe

Hitler and Joseph Goebbels committed suicide on 30 April and 1 May 1945 respectively. Misch witnessed the discovery of the bodies of Hitler and Eva Braun after their suicides, and was present (in the bunker complex) during the time the Goebbels poisoned their children.Misch and mechanic Johannes Hentschel, two of the last people remaining in the bunker, exchanged letters to their wives in case anything happened to them. Misch fled the bunker on 2 May only hours before the Red Army seized it. He was captured shortly thereafter by Soviet forces. Misch was then tortured in an attempt to extract information regarding Hitler's exact fate. Misch spent nine years in Soviet labor camps.

Reinhold Messner (born 17 September 1944, in Brixen) is an Italian mountaineer and explorer from the German-speaking autonomous province Südtirol "whose astonishing feats on Everest and on peaks throughout the world have earned him the status of the greatest climber in history." He is renowned for making the first solo ascent of Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen and for being the first climber to ascend all fourteen "eight-thousanders" .

As of 2004, with the entry of the Czech Republic into the European Union Vladimír Remek is considered to be the first astronaut from the EU. He flew aboard Soyuz 28 from March 2nd to March 10th 1978, for seven days, 22 hours, and 17 minutes. In 2004 he was elected into the European Parliament.
